Originally designed by Joseph Bonomi and built by John Marshall between 1836 and 1840. 

The Temple Works design was based on the Temple of Horus in Egypt. When it was built it was intended to have the largest single room in the world. An unusual feature of the original structure was a grass roof which was fed on by a number of sheep. This roofs purpose was to keep the flax inside the mill at an optimal humidity to prevent it from drying out.

This incredible village is built entirely on wooden stilts above sea level, with some of the inhabitants never having ventured onto dry land. Koh Panyee has a population of 1485 people made up of just 315 families. The villagers are said to be decendents of the original inhabitants of Koh Panyee. The Toh Baboo family left their homes in Indonesia by boat looking for the promised land. When they had found a place where everyone could live with lots of fish, they would signal by raising a flag at as high point as possible. So when the island was discovered the flag was raised and Koh Panyee (The island of the flag) was born.

The island of course gets its name and fame from the James Bond movie 'The Man With the Golden Gun'. With a huge limestone pinnacle at its centre, Koh Ping-Gan is the quintessential vision of Thai coastal scenics.

They watch the tourists who move through the cave entrance, patiently gazing at peoples footsteps yet bold as they approach. This was their temple not ours.
